Introducing the 2025 Patent Bots Patent Speed Rankings

You know Patent Bots for our annual Patent Quality Rankings. We’re excited to share that we have added a new analysis around issued patents, the Patent Bots Patent Speed Rankings.

To determine the Patent Speed Rankings, Patent Bots processed every patent issued by the USPTO over the course of a year to assess the number of days from the first office action to issuance. We then ranked the 710 patent law firms with 50+ issued patents based on how long they take to get a patent issued. The rankings are based on the Patent Bots Speed Score, which takes into account different prosecution pendencies across different USPTO tech centers.

There are times when speed is of the utmost importance to the success of the client company, such as when you have an active infringer, need to defend yourself in litigation, or need to increase the value of the company for acquisition or investment. In other situations, there may be a balance between speed and other factors, such as obtaining broader claims. In either case, having the data and insight provided by our metrics can be valuable for understanding how a firm works with their clients.

In addition to the overall Speed Score, we assessed the data and ranked firms on other metrics that contribute to the time to issuance, including the number of extensions per patent, the number of office actions per patent, and the number of requests for continued examination per patent. This information is available within the Patent Bots PatentVerse tool; details about the top ten in each category is publicly available, while further rankings require a Patent Bots subscription.

And now, on to the rankings for each metric!

Patent Bots Rankings Methodology

We rank law firms over several criteria:
  • Number of issued patents.
  • Average extensions per patent.
  • Average office actions per patent.
  • Average RCEs per patent.
  • Speed Score — The number of days from the first office action to issuance (normalized by tech center).
  • Quality Score — The number of proofreading errors in the issued patent (normalized by tech center).
Of course we recognize that speed is subjective and that many factors contribute to the timeline from application to issuance.

Note: Some companies file their own patents rather than filing through outside counsel. In these instances, the company is both the patent filer AND the patent owner and is included in our rankings as a firm.
